The other performances in the film are so dull and wooden that the story doesn’t really come alive with the population of characters – particularly Mala Powers in the role of Roxane.

It is a wonderful performance, but sadly it is on display in the middle of one of the least engaging productions that I can remember. It isn’t on the surface, you can hear it in his words. He could twist and turn Rostand’s beautiful words with a wry sense of style but underneath you could sense that his Cyrano was pinned down by a sense of insecurity due to his looks. Ferrer had a broad personality, a deep and resonating voice and a formidable screen presence. He played the role again in 1949 in a television play just before starring in Michael Gordon’s film version which brought him his only Oscar. In 1951 Ferrer became the first of two Puerto Rican actors to win an Oscar for acting (the other was Benicio Del Toro half a century later), but by the time he won, he was no stranger to the role of Rostand’s charming swordsman, born with an oversized proboscis, who possess a gift for words but fears that the beautiful Roxane will find him grotesque.įerrer began playing the role on stage in 1946, and the following year was given a Tony award for his performance. This too, applies as José Ferrer who, now and forever, owns the part of Cyrano de Bergerac. Bela Lugosi is the very embodiment of Count Dracula Humphrey Bogart is forever Sam Spade and Basil Rathbone will always be Sherlock Holmes. It is rare that an actor can put a stamp on a literary character so indelibly that it not only defines their career but forever changes our perception of the role. Louis Calhern ( The Magnificent Yankee), William Holden ( Sunset Blvd.), Jimmy Stewart ( Harvey), Spencer Tracy ( Father of the Bride)
